Feelings: what do they really mean, and how do they play a role in our lives? The power we give to feelings, the way we view how they affect us, and what we let them do to us is what we decide. So, there are a lot of ways people choose to look at feelings. Feelings can feel very real, but are they? Do feelings really mean all that we place on them, or do we place way too much importance on them? Feelings should be a gage to us, allowing us to realize what is happening in and around us. But we need to be very careful that they do not overwhelm us and force us to act in a way that is hurtful to us or others.

So, let’s take a look at emotions or feelings. What do we really have? We have two sets of emotions or feelings: one positive, one negative. We all strive to have more positive feelings and emotions than negative. So, what is positive emotions or feelings, and more importantly how do we get them and keep them? Love, the best and the biggest, also the most potential for hurt and abuse. Love, the thing most of us search for most of our lives. We place extreme importance on it and we wrap our whole lives around finding it, keeping it, and in some cases controlling it. We will even try to force it when we can. Love can give us fireworks, butterflies and brain fog, or it can inspire us to violence, controlling behavior, and anger. We see that love has two sides, exactly like every other emotion.

Every emotion we have has two sides. One can view love as a positive thing, or a negative thing. It can start off as all the things we just described, then turn around and become the exact opposite. Feelings need to be nurtured, cultivated, and they grow. On the other hand, if we ignore them, they can die. We can choose to do one thing or another. I know a lot of people state that there is a right thing or way and a wrong one. What we choose to do with the feelings we have falls to us. A lot of how things turn out is because of how we see things, what we saw modeled growing up. We will always do what we know. Learning how to break the cycle, at Alpha & Omega Counseling Center we use CBT therapy. We can help.
